Show Me the Money Series (Part 3)
Know What You Are Getting Into Before Accepting and Offer
Learn About Compensation Practices
If compensation is a priority, when job searching, in addition to learning about the culture, the role, the boss, the team, the business etc. find out about compensation practices. Most organizations aim to pay their staff within a specific quartile (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) with the top 25% (first quartile) paying the highest and the 4th the lowest. See if you can find out where the organization positions itself. Some organizations pay well in an industry and some pay less well. But don’t be fooled, some lower paying employers are fabulous in other ways, so figure out what really matters to you as you do your research.
The Negotiation
Upon receiving an offer from an employer, you may be able to negotiate on salary. Be careful that you don’t press simply the “I want” button (we all want as much income as possible). Base your negotiation on an understanding of what the organization is looking for in the role and the extent to which you meet or exceed those needs. Remember that the organization is balancing a desire to hire you with a desire to maintain internal equity regarding compensation. How you handle the negotiation says a lot about you.
Confidence is generally seen as an asset while arrogance is generally not. So approach the conversation with grace.
If money truly is your priority then you need to steer your career in that direction. Don’t apply for jobs with lower paying organizations. Ensure you have all of the credentials to warrant the highest pay. You may also want to steer your career towards higher paying industries. Very few people go into the Non-Profit sector if a high salary is what they are looking for. There are however an enormous number of reasons to seek a career in the non-profit sector, money just isn’t one of them.
A Final Reminder
Really think about what brings you happiness and fulfillment. An over-focus on money may not actually lead to happiness, even though we think it might. What we DO with our money is a stronger predictor of that happiness.
Good Luck!
